Where did my guy go?

Hey so new to this not a clue what im doing yet, i played for a couple of hours then the game went off for an update.
When i returned i cant go the same guy who i did the work on it only gives me the option to make a new one?
Does this game save characters or is it a reset everytime i want to play?
